The Winter and its Truth

Teresa Bauer

Waiting out Winter winter of the soul hazy dusk of the mind. subdued. quiet. time of searching. searching in the twilight, sometimes hiding, waiting for spring to come bringing hope. we wait for hope hibernating in obscurity waiting out winter.

I wrote this about 5 years ago when I was in my own personal season of winter. I didn’t know how true it would be every year. Like clockwork, the winter months would drag me underground into what became a waiting place until the sun warmed the buds of the trees.

I used to think there was something wrong with me and I would resist this feeling of darkness.

But year after year, I began to see the pattern, the necessary rhythm that full life requires. Like a farmer’s field, our lives are in seasons. And like the farmer’s field, the natural seasons are set up for the vitality of the crop and those it feeds.

We are not meant to be on full steam, full swing, all or nothing, all the time. Our bodies and minds are meant to follow the rhythm of the natural cycle of life. Collect. Grow. Produce. Prune. Produce. Release. Rest. Repeat.

Winter rest is vital to the other seasons of life. What is the best way to do this? Do we unplug completely from everything and play dead? Ha, NO! But we can pay attention to what’s going on in our body and mind and respond with kindness. Perhaps we can let go of a few things that can wait for another time. Perhaps we can allow more silence in our life. Stare at the winter sky at night.

More than anything, be aware. Is there a feeling of sadness, grief, loss? Is there a need for rest more than normal? If you feel like this, there is nothing wrong with you. Hibernating from too much activity and social engagement can do wonders for our growth and fruitfulness. The season will do its thing and spring will come and leaves will again fill the trees and the grass will need cutting. It always does.
